Acupuncture and Coping Skills
Training for Cocaine Abuse
495 Congress Avenue Phone: (203) 781-4690 Description of Treatment – This study offers treatment for individuals who are opiate dependent and using cocaine and who are willing or waiting to go on methadone. The goal of this study is to compare four treatments for cocaine addiction. These four treatments are: standard methadone counseling, acupuncture, coping skills training, and acupuncture plus coping skills training. Standard methadone counseling consists of weekly sessions (30 minutes) with a methadone counselor. Acupuncture is a daily one hour treatment that consists of the insertion of small needles into each outer ear. These acupuncture treatments may reduce cocaine cravings. Coping skills training is a two hour group treatment that teaches individuals skills that may help them handle stress and situations that are associated with drug use. Acupuncture plus skills training entails both acupuncture treatments and the coping skills training group. Clients are randomly assigned to one of the treatments described above. Each client will receive standard methadone counseling, either by itself or in combination with a treatment mentioned above, depending on which condition the client is randomized to. This study is a 3 month treatment. Some clients may be eligible to continue for an additional 6 months. Clients may receive up to $75 in Walmart vouchers if all requirements are met throughout the study. Clients must be available between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. to receive methadone and study medication. Attendance is required at weekly counseling sessions, which are offered between 8:30 and 4:00. Anyone interested in entering treatment should call (203) 781-4690.
