Central Medical Unit (CMU): is a primary care medical clinic providing medical care to all persons registered in the APT/SATU/Hispanic Services (CMHC) system. While a client is registered in any of these systems, he/she is welcome to utilize this clinic for general health care needs. Patients with health concerns and who have substance abuse problems or with mental health problems may also utilize CMU's services. Who We Are: Our clinical staff includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physicians assistants, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and a certified phlebotomist.What We Do: We provide a wide range of health care services such as health histories, physical examinations, and laboratory services. We also evaluate and treat medical problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiac disease. We provide care for urgent conditions such as minor injuries and infections like sore throat and pneumonia. As health care providers who specialize in addiction medicine, we are active in screening and treating patients for TB, endocarditis, hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, abscesses, and HIV.Health education and counseling are available for a variety of illnesses as well as a wide range of services for persons with HIV/AIDS. We can arrange referrals to other facilities for necessary services that are not available at the clinic. We provide immunizations for flu, hepatitis, and tetanus. Detoxification Services at Central Medical Unit: We provide outpatient detoxification services for opiates, alcohol, and benzodiazepines when indicated. We also collaborate with the APT research team to provide opiate detoxification with a no-fee treatment protocol. The Outpatient Alcohol Detoxification program is a short-term program offered to patients who are alcohol dependent. Patients participating in the outpatient alcohol detoxification program must be willing to come to Central Medical Unit daily during detoxification and to accept antabuse or naltrexone, when appropriate, as part of the detoxification and maintenance treatment. The Outpatient Opiate Detoxification program is also a short-term program for persons who are dependent on opiates such as heroin or Oxycontin. As part of the detoxification, patients are prescribed naltrexone to shorten the detoxification process and assist with abstaining from drugs by naltrexone's opiate blocking action. Inclusion criteria include: Patients must be alcohol or opiate dependent based on DSM-IV criteria Patients must be able to comply with treatment Exclusion criteria include: Seizure disorder Co-addiction to benzodiazepines Adverse reaction to medications used in detoxification Pregnancy Unstable medical, psychiatric or living conditions Those excluded will be provided with a referral for inpatient treatment. Appointments for detoxification are required; patients should schedule a telephone evaluation prior to receiving an appointment for detoxification. Appointments: Appointments may be made in person or by calling 203-781-4640. If you have an urgent problem and do not have an appointment, please try to call us so we can work you into our schedule. If you walk in without an appointment, you will be asked to wait until those with scheduled appointments have been seen. Walk in patients will be seen on a first come, first served basis, unless an emergency is evident. at Most State funded General Assistance Programs are accepted, including: SAGA, Medicaid (Title XIX-19), Managed Medicaid, and Medicare. Some Private Insurers are accepted at CMU, please call to find out if your insurer is a accepted. There is a sliding fee scale available to those who qualify for financial assistance.
