COPE - Center of Progressive Education
at the Residential Services Division The COPE School is a State of Connecticut licensed and approved special education program for adolescents who are in the Transitions program. COPE serves both males and females between the ages of sixteen and twenty-one. Students are offered the opportunity to participate in an educational process that will allow them to earn credit toward a high school diploma. COPE teachers are experienced professionals and are certified in the areas of English, math, science, social studies, history, art and special education. COPE offers students the opportunity to learn in small classes (maximum 10 students per class) with individualized attention. Students can earn credits that transfer to their home high school transcript. Instruction takes place for 30 hours per week during a 180-day academic year. There is also a non-credit summer program that includes study skills and recreation. It is the mission of the Center of Progressive Education to help students develop and improve skills, both affective and cognitive, that will provide success as Learners. We will determine individual needs and provide a learning environment where these skills are nurtured, working interactively with students as participants in a comprehensive educational plan that begins here but follows the student on return to the community. Students who are admitted to Transition program are mandated to attend COPE School. Transitions accepts referrals from the Court Support Services Division of the State of Connecticut. For information, call the intake coordinator at the Residential Services Division at: (203) 337-9943 extension 114.
