HIV and Cocaine Use:
Cardiovascular Effects and Therapy
495 Congress Avenue Phone: (203) 781-4690 Description of Treatment – This study is a six month treatment specially designed for HIV-positive drug users who use cocaine and are currently on methadone or are waiting to be on methadone. Clients receive weekly individual treatment sessions and are randomly assigned to receive an ace inhibitor medication called Fosinopril (20 mg a day) or a placebo. The purpose of this study is to determine if the blood pressure medication, Fosinopril, is an effective treatment for cocaine addiction and if it can protect against, or reverse, the toxic effects of cocaine on the heart. Treatment focuses on assisting clients to achieve abstinence from drug use, improve their health, and increase their quality of life. Clients may receive up to $500 in Walmart vouchers if all requirements are met throughout the study. Clients must be
available between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. to receive methadone and study
medication. Attendance is required at weekly counseling sessions, which
are offered between 8:30 and 4:00.
