Treatment -
All patients in our methadone maintenance programs must participate in counseling: group
and/or individual. Counseling focuses on achieving stability in all aspects of health and daily living,
identifying triggers for drug use, finding appropriate leisure activities, and relapse prevention. Vocational
services are available through APT Vocational Services, and primary care through Central Medical Unit.
Psychiatric evaluation is available at each of the clinics, and there are dual diagnosis groups.
Who we serve -
Adults age 21 and over who have a verifiable opiate addiction of more than one year, and
at least one treatment failure, are eligible for services. Pregnant women under the age of 21 may be
admitted by exception. The methadone clinics serve a wide geographical region, from Milford to Old
Saybrook, the Lower Naugatuck Valley, and the towns north of New Haven to Wallingford.
Treatment Expectations -
Patients are expected to come to the clinic as scheduled for medicating and for
all counseling sessions. Patients are expected to stop the use of illegal drugs. Regular randomized urine
testing is conducted at all clinics. As patients progress in treatment, bottle privileges can be earned, and
clinic contact decreases as appropriate.
Special Services
-
Within the methadone clinics, several special programs are available:
Women in Treatment
(WIT) -
Part of the Orchard Clinic, WIT provides gender specific, culturally
sensitive services to opiate-dependent women.
Holistic Women's Services
(HWS) -
A
service the
Orchard Hill Treatment Services and funded by the Ryan White Title One Office of
the City of New Haven, offers specialized services to women who are HIV positive or living with AIDS and
in need
of medical monitoring. HWS treats women in a framework of women's
issues, incorporating a focus on parenting and nutrition; and providing relaxation techniques,
lunches and healthy snacks. Childcare services are available during treatment hours.
An active participant in the New Haven AIDS
Collaborative, HWS works closely with APT's Central Medical Unit; local
service providers such as AIDS Project New Haven, AIDS Interfaith Network, and
Hispanos Unidos for case management; Yale-New Haven Hospital's Nathan Smith
Clinic and the Hospital of St. Raphael's Haelen Center for AIDS Care for
specialty medical care; Clifford Beers Guidance Clinic for family counseling and
specialized counseling for child-related issues; Shelter Plus Care and Connecticut
AIDS Residence Program for housing; and Leeway, Inc. for specialty nursing
home/hospice services.
Holistic Treatment Services
(HTS) -
A service of the Legion Avenue Clinic, HTS offers groups, nutrition, case
management, and individuals who are methadone maintained with HIV/AIDS.
This program is funded through the Greater New Haven United Way.
Hours of Operation -
Each of the clinics is open for medicating starting at
6 a.m. to accommodate patients'
work schedules. Counseling hours are available Monday - Friday in the morning, afternoon, and early evening.
Professional Staff -
The methadone maintenance clinics are all staffed by treatment teams consisting of
physicians, nurses, MSWs, certified drug and alcohol counselors, other clinicians, and administrative
support.
To Enter Treatment for Opiate Addiction -
Central Opiate Intake (COI) is designed to be a "one-stop"
entry point to allow individuals needing methadone maintenance services rapid access to treatment.
