Treatment Description and Population Served:

There are several research protocols available which examine ways to improve treatment on an outpatient basis for Opiate dependant clients who may or may not also be cocaine abusers. Participation in these clinical trials, in which patients are maintained on either LAAM or buprenorphine, is free of charge and consists of initial medical and psychological screenings and an orientation to the program. These are followed by weekly behavioral assessments and urine screenings, periodic bloodwork, and both individual
and group counseling.

In addition, these studies contain a contingency management segment which may allow clients to earn either vouchers, which can be used to purchase goods and/or services consistent with the treatment goals, or food coupons to be redeemed at local grocery stores.

Program Expectation:

Clients are expected to keep scheduled medication dispensing and counseling appointments, give up weekly urines, complete assignment forms, and attend group sessions.

What can be expected from the Program?

By combining pharmacological and psychosocial interventions with contingency management, and in some cases, nutrition counseling, these treatment programs are intended to improve the overall health of clients and to facilitate attaining a drug-free lifestyle. Clients can expect to be treated with respect, professionalism, and caring in an environment which promotes safety and confidentiality. They are encouraged to use the programs as a resource to meet such goals as achieving abstinence, making lifestyle changes, developing coping skills, and accessing community support.
