Women in Treatment (WIT)

The Women In Treatment (WIT) program provides gender specific, culturally-appropriate, focused methadone maintenance services to substance abusing women from New Haven, with an emphasis on African-American and Hispanic women. The treatment philosophy is that there is a close correlation between substance abuse, psychological history, and socioeconomic factors, and that truly effective treatment must concern itself with all of those elements.

To enter the program, patients must be female, at least 21 years old and reside in the Greater New Haven area. They also must be able to demonstrate a one year history of addiction to opiates. Pregnant women are considered a medical emergency and are admitted immediately. Patients are required to have a physical examination, pregnancy test, TB test and blood work prior to admission.

Additional services provided include:

Child care services on the premises for children while the parent attends counseling.

A once weekly group to prepare the new patient for the methadone maintenance program and related services that promote recovery.

Hour long counseling sessions to address the patient's psychological and/or psychiatric issues.

A once weekly counseling group that meets for 12 weeks to help patients look at triggers for their cocaine use as well as specific behavioral strategies to help them stop using cocaine.
